Colescott Rubin literally performs in his sleep. He has the bizarre ability to conk out in almost any situation, and while sleeping, vividly dream his performances before they happen. His bandmates have even started a photo alum of him sleeping in unusual situations!
During his waking hours however, he is a bassist, vocalist, and entertainer living in Boston, Massachusetts. He plays soul, blues, doo-wop, and specializes in early swing and traditional jazz with New Orleans influences. Since he began his journey in Portland, Oregon, he has performed and/or recorded with Esperanza Spalding, Patrice Rushen, Jeff Hamilton, Terence Blanchard, Terrell Stafford, Chuck Israels, Terri Lyne Carrington, Catherine Russell, Kenny Werner, Charmaine Neville, and others.
He is an assistant professor at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he teaches in the Bass and Voice departments, and is an alumnus of the Berklee Global Jazz Institute and the Berklee Internet Radio Network. He has received multiple awards for his bass playing and has been featured on television and radio nationally and internationally, having performed at festivals and on tours across the U.S., Europe, and South America.
His main project is the Garden of Joy, a traditional swing band based between Boston and New Orleans, which has played Boston’s Beantown Jazz Festival and Satchmo Summerfest in New Orleans. You can see them live at their monthly residency at the Burren in Somerville, as well as other venues in the Boston area.
